Rope Rescue

Rope Rescue

Rope rescue is considered the cornerstone of technical rescue, as many of the other disciplines incorporate rope rescue techniques. Rope rescue utilizes physics principles to safely reach locations we would otherwise be unable to reach. Some of the physics and mathematical calculations used consistently include:

  • Angle, load and force calculations
  • Mechanical advantage haul systems in a variety of configurations
  • Physical offsets
  • Anchor systems
  • Friction

Rope rescue utilizes a variety of techniques to ensure rescuer safety and patient safety. Some of the techniques used include:

  • Multiple types of knots and their safety ratings and use capabilities
  • Rappelling and ascending ropes
  • Two-lines for operations when possible, and single-line techniques in unique situations
  • High and low angle systems
  • Lowering systems
  • Mid-line rescues
  • Patient packaging and care
  • Litter operations
  • High directional offsets
  • Highlines for spanning large distances
